Everyone knows you need to get a healthy dose of greens each day, and we’re all trying to guzzle enough water to stay completely hydrated. But what about sunshine? Did you know you need to get a daily dose of the stuff to not only stay healthy and happy, but also to aid in weight loss?

Here’s how it works:
The body needs serotonin. This neurotransmitter is a chemical produced by the body. It is responsible for sending messages between nerve cells. If you’re not a doctor or a scientist—here’s what that means: serotonin is a “feel good” hormone. Higher levels of serotonin are associated with feelings of happiness, joy, and relaxation.

On the other hand, low serotonin levels are linked to weakened immune function and depression. Yep, depression. Which is exactly why people start to feel the long winter blues when the sunlight dwindles.
Many people try to fill the serotonin void by eating. Somehow, simple carbs kind of replicate serotonin. Of course, carbs are nowhere near as effective or as long-lasting as serotonin from sunlight. Therefore, the resulting high from simple carbs leaves you wanting more.
This is what happens when the body turns to carbs, rather than to sunlight for the important hormone serotonin. You crave carbs, then you munch on easy-to-find carbs (usually a simple carb like chips or some other junk food.) The food simulates a brief serotonin high, but then you crash and begin looking for more carbs to simulate serotonin. Next, you look for more snacks, eat more junk food, and again crash. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
It’s a wicked cycle, because you can never eat enough carbs to reach the level of serotonin that you need, and food cannot sustain the levels like sunshine can. So all that happens is you gain weight, lose health, and probably become more depressed. It can be a losing battle.
Here’s what we recommend. Get a big daily dose of sunshine and avoid the carb cycle and depression.
So how much sunshine is necessary?
Doctors recommend at least fifteen minutes of sunshine each day. It’s perfect. You can go on a walk during lunch or just breathe some fresh air during an afternoon break. How about getting off of the bus at the far bus stop and walking the few extra blocks everyday. It’s good for your heart and your serotonin levels.
In the winter when sunshine is harder to come by, try a sunlamp. These lamps are designed to replicate the lightwaves the sun produces. The lamps are very effective in staving off depression because they really can provide the necessary levels of serotonin.
